Disorganized Attachment (D): Developmental and Clinical Consequences
In this presentation it will be:

• Described Main and Solomon’s early descriptions of disorganized attachment (D) in the Strange Situation
• Described the clinical settings in which D is most commonly found: socio-economically stressed families; families presenting to child and adolescent mental health clinics; where there is a history of child maltreatment
• Described D analogues in the Adult Attachment Interview
• Outlined long-term follow-up studies which indicate D as a risk factor for psychopathology in adolescence and early adulthood
• Described Cicchetti and Lyons-Ruth’s later later conceptualisations of D
• Discussed the relationship between D and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
• Considered possible therapeutic strategies for working with D children and adults.
This will lead to learning outcomes for participants who will be able to:
• Understand the concept and evidence base for Disorganised attachment
• Recognise Disorganised attachment in clinical settings
• Understand the clinical skills and strategies needed to work with children and adults diagnosed with Disorganised attachment
